چکیده

Subglottal resonances are claimed to divide front/back vowels and low/high vowels in several languages, including Hungarian. However, some ‘recalcitrant’ vowels appear to resist this mould. We therefore performed a careful analysis of the role coarticulation and speaker-dependent effects might play in the recalcitrance of these vowels in Hungarian. The present analyzis focused on various stop contexts in order to see the place of articulation triggered effects. It is shown that the subglottal resonances indeed divide the vowel space as claimed, and that the recalcitrance of certain vowels is due to coarticulation with specific consonants. The magnitude of the coarticulation effect is speaker dependent.

Relation of formants and subglottal resonances in Hungarian vowels

The relation between vowel formants and subglottal resonances (SGRs) has previously been explored in English, German, and Korean. Results from these studies indicate that vowel classes are categorically separated by SGRs. We extended this work to Hungarian vowels, which have not been related to SGRs before. The Hungarian vowel system contains paired long and short vowels as well as a series of ...

Acceleration Sensor Based Estimates of Subglottal Resonances: Short vs. Long Vowels

The current version ACCV4 of our acceleration sensor device is presented and used to study the influence of vowel duration to the estimates of resonances of the subglottal system of 7 female and 9 male speakers. The sensor records movements in all three spatial directions below 5 kHz. It is gently pressed to the neck of the speaker in front of the cricothyroid ligament, a soft tissue in the low...

Comparison of manual and automated estimates of subglottal resonances

This study compares manual measurements of the first two subglottal resonances to the results of an automated measurement procedure for the same quantities. We also briefly sketch the sensor prototype that is used for the measurements. The subglottal resonances are presented in the space spanned by the vowels’ first two formants. A three axis acceleration sensor is gently pressed at the neck of...

The relationship between the second subglottal resonance and vowel class, standing height, trunk length, and F0 variation for Mandarin speakers

The relationship between vowel formants and the second subglottal resonance (Sg2) has previously been explored in English, German, Hungarian and Korean. Results from these studies indicate that vowel space is categorically divided by Sg2 and that Sg2 correlates well with standing height. One of the goals of this work is to verify if the above findings hold true in Mandarin as well. The correlat...

Subglottal resonances of adult male and female native speakers of American English.

This paper presents a large-scale study of subglottal resonances (SGRs) (the resonant frequencies of the tracheo-bronchial tree) and their relations to various acoustical and physiological characteristics of speakers. The paper presents data from a corpus of simultaneous microphone and accelerometer recordings of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words embedded in a carrier phrase spoken by 25 ma...
